My Husband is a Drunk And I dont know how, why or when it by Madeline Harding

Now when I say “What to do when your husband doesn’t come home,” I’m not talking about if he said he was on his way home from work, and it’s been an hour and still hasn’t arrived. When it comes to how to deal with an alcoholic husband in denial, speaking to them about the issue in length seems a better option. I work full time, do all the children’s logistics, sick days, laundry and we share shopping and cooking only. And he told me 100 times to trust him, sometimes I am embarrassed that I cannot trust my own husband. Since I have no proof if he cheats, so I take it as my own insecurities and not his problem. When I tell him what he does, makes me worry and I would be sad if he did do something, that works very well.

These men are not present in their home and Im not talking about the 2-3 hrs they are in the pub, when they come home they are drunk so are not available to their family. Go and watch a football match yes, but if you are going to the pub every evening, that is a problem in my book. Ive been married for 5 years and I can honestly say that coming straight home from work everyday and dialing into the family does not help the man out in anyway. I get up at 5 and often get home between 645 and 740pm.

You took decisions with the info you had then. You said he was working on getting better, what exactly? All I read was he got drunk as usual and was violent again.

Apart from a cough, which is due to his smoking, he is in relatively good health. He may take the lead in excoriating and flagellating himself for his unpardonable sin as a demonstration of penance and a reassurance to those he has harmed or offended. What I see is a person with strength that is opening her eyes. The fact that you are here shows you are growing.

My Husband and I Both Considered Running Away Before the Wedding

When my marriage was falling apart, my one to one sessions with a counsellor really helped me. It helped me gain a better perspective on what was happening to me. You can always ask your local domstive violence service for advice. The hardest thing to accept is that you cannot change him. Nothing you do or say will make that happen. He is the only one who can change himself.

One big thing I've learnt from this site that has helped me alot is detachment. Learning to make yourself happy, not depending on him, not letting him control your emotions...just getting on with it, making my own decisions and not depending on another....letting go. You CAN'T change him, you're wasting your energy, your tears, your pleading, it won't work. Thus the addict is often almost demonically astute at exploiting the vulnerabilities and Achilles Heels of those who, wittingly or unwittingly, threaten the continuance of his addiction. I am SOOO glad you and your child are safe, and not living with this on a daily basis.

Alcohol and Personality Changes

There are many reasons why it happens. Stress, anxiety, depression, and infidelity are all common contributors. In our case, it was all of the above plus other factors that I still don’t know about many years after we became divorced. We hadn’t been married for very long when my husband stopped paying his share of the bills.

I dilute his whisky when I am able to, but not by too much, as he can tell by the taste if it is too watered down. The material on this site is for informational purposes only, and is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment provided by a qualified health care provider. The addict finally acknowledges and even believes that he has a significant problem but is adamant that he can and will deal with it by himself rather than seeking any kind of professional or support group help.

I don’t have much freedom as he does this and then I watch the children until bedtime. I’m seeing a therapist Now but don’t feel there is much of me in this relationship. Contrary to popular belief many men would relish the chance to be the primary care giver to the child – yet very few women are willing to give up this opportunity. I have an exceptionally stressful job and I do go for a drink a couple times a week to de-stress on the way home from work – I also get shouted at for taking an hour to myself a couple times a week.

I empathise with you wholeheartedly, OP. I grew up with a violent alcoholic mother and it never, ever leaves you. My ex DH was an alcoholic as was my grandad, and even now 22 years on I still get that fear if my DH is late home from the pub.

They often use the i have to take care the kids to deny intimacy! Does marriage sound like a good deal. Anyone under the age of 30 should have a good paying job date women and take your time with marriage. Close to 50 percent of them fail anyways.

It’s instant bombardment with energy, information and demands. No one cares how this affects men long term apparently. I don’t feel like playing after 13 hours of work. I don’t feel like having to cook, or run an errand or talk about important things after a long day.

However, this might not be a good decision, ever. To help you, listed below are some pointers on how to live with an alcoholic husband. I found that the best approach for me to get my husband to understand is by speaking gently, sincerely and femininely. If I raise my voice, or complain his male ego shuts down.
